KATHMANDU, Dec 7: The government on Wednesday suspended Chief District Officer (CDO) of Chitwan Nanda Kishor Tripathi for failing to ensure security of the inmates in Chitwan jail. On Tuesday the government had suspended jailer Chudamani Sharma Paudel, district police chief SP Khinu Prasad Acharya and another security official Shiva Raj Regmi, among others. New CDO Ganesh Karki has replaced Tripathi and Bhupal Bhandari has replaced police chief Acharya.[break] According to Bhandari, a 24-member police team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Lalkaji Shrestha has been deployed for jail security. Meanwhile, the probe panel led by Shankar Koirala, joint secretary at the ministry of home, arrived in Chitwan on Wednesday. The team also talked to the doctors to know about the health condition of injured Shiva Poudel who is receiving treatment at the ICU of the Bharatpur Medical College. “We will investigate for a week and bring out the truth about the incident,” said Koirala. Poudel was attacked when he was asleep in the jail NC cadres stage nationwide protests Cadres of the Nepali Congress (NC) on Wednesday held demonstrations across the country against the assault on their leader inside the Chitwan jail. Poudel is still in a critical condition at Bharatpur Medical College where he was operated upon by senior neurosurgeon Upendra Devkota on Tuesday. Vehicular movement was brought to a standstill while schools and educational institutions, factories and shops remained closed. Meanwhile, NC-affiliated Nepal Students´ Union (NSU) has also called an indefinite strike in educational institutions starting Wednesday. Tarun Dal, Chitwan had also shut down Chitwan on Tuesday demanding action against those involved in the prison attack. Meanwhile, our local correspondents have reported that the strike also hit Gulmi, Syangja and Mugu. Similarly, NC, NSU and Tarun Dal cadres stopped vehicular movement for three hours in Dhangadi, an hour in Itahari and Palpa. Likewise, three vehicles have been vandalized by protestors in Dhangadi.
